The main west facing facade of the building is as a large-scale public work of art consisting of 105 moveable metal sunshades, each one carrying a life-sized, water-cut portrait of a contemporary Liverpool resident. DHA Designs introduced a cantilevered rail along the top of the facade to hide linear LED wall grazers from Ecosense, to wash down the facade using a precise 10 x 60degree optic, which also lights down onto the 1/F balcony below.
Internally, DHA Designs worked closely with HTA's team and Mike Stoane Lighting to design a series of industrial themed custom pendants and surface mounted fixtures using raw copper compents, braided cables and exposed warm white LED lamps. In the basement restaurant and bar, the luminiares are individually suspended from unique counter-weights, allowing each fixture to be lowered above a table for a more intimate setting.
The project has won RIBA National and Regional awards, and is shortlisted for the RIBA Sirling Prize 2014.
